MEDICAL MISSION TO ENUGU STATE, NIGERIA (2008) Medical Mission Projects
Mission in Nigeria


 


 


One World Healthcare USA, Inc. undertook a medical mission trip to Enugu State, Nigeria in March 2008. The mission was co sponsored by Enugu State Government, Medical Bridges Organization, Houston, Texas USA,\ and Memorial Hermann Medical Missions, Houston, Texas USA. Resident doctors and nurses joined our team from Enugu State teaching Hospital , Enugu State and Ebonyi State Teaching Hospital, Abakiliki, Ebonyi State, Nigeria. The US contingent was accompanied by Dr. Mary VanSickle, Head, Department of OB/GYN, Memorial Hermann Hospital Southwest, Houston, Texas and Dorothy Bolettieri, CEO, Medical Bridges organization, Houston, Texas USA. These two individuals, on their first and only trip to the African continent, worked tirelessly and selflessly daily.

The team conducted didactic and practical sessions in intrapartum fetal monitoring and performed surgeries at Park Lane ( ESUTH ) Teaching Hospital. Cesarean surgeries and major gynecologic procedures were also performed in collaboration with the local counterparts. Field clinics were held in 5 communities where a total of over 1500 patients were seen and treated. Follow up referrals were made to local physicians in Enugu.

Special clinic sessions were held for the Enugu State pensioners at Enugu and the Biafra war veterans at Oji-River General Hospital, Oji-River, Enugu State.

Diseases treated include Glaucoma, Cataracts, Diabetes, Hypertension, Depression, Pregnancy, Cancer, Arthritis, Psoriasis, HIV/AIDS, and female genital problems.

To end the mission, Dr. Jude Akubilo, Adviser to the State Government on Diaspora Matters, organized a recognition ceremony at which members of the team were conferred chieftaincy by the State commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Goddy Ogbo and the Head of the State Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Nnaji. This was a very exciting and relaxing way to end the trip. The occasion was enjoyed by everyone.

Mission to Enugu State, Nigeria (2006)

One World Healthcare USA, Inc. participated in a medical mission to Enugu State, Nigeria in December 2006. The mission was in collaboration with EnuguUSA Medical Missions and cosponsored by Enugu State government, Medical Bridges Organization, Houston USA and Memorial Hermann Medical Missions, Houston USA. During this mission Dr. Kanayo Ubesie also served as the Chief medical director of EnuguUSA medical missions.

A large contingent of healthcare workers travelled from all parts of United States and converged in the city of Enugu, Nigeria. Over a five day period, 15 communities were visited and over 5000 patient contacts were made. Park Lane Hospital, Enugu served as the staging and continuing education center during the mission.

The maternal-child nursing team conducted in service didactic and practical training sessions for their counterparts drawn from the various health districts in the state. The eye diseases team conducted eye examinations, diagnosed, treated eye diseases and dispensed 175 eye glasses. The surgical team performed obstetric and gynecologic surgeries in collaboration with their counterparts from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology , ESUTH Teaching Hospital( Park Lane ), Enugu.

Diseases encountered include Diabetes, Hypertension, Arthritis, Cataracts, Glaucoma, Breast cancer, Infertility, High risk pregnancies, and diseases of the female genital tract.
